Whenever I try to sweep at wushu class, my shoes stick to the carpet and I cant spin. Its annoying and I always fall down.

I assume that it's your left foot that is preventing you from rotating. If it is your right foot, then you might need to work on leg strengthening.

When you sweep, you need to be able to support yourself on the ball of your left foot for the entire sweep. Putting your heel down will increase friction between your foot and the carpet, thus stopping your rotation. When this happens, your body will also lose balance and you will fall down.

I'm not an expert, so I can't guarantee this would work for you, but try holding yourself in a sweeping position. For the front sweep, squat down, then extend your right leg outward. Make sure your back is straight and your left heel is not touching the ground. If you can keep your balance in this static position, then sweeping will be easier. Also, to work on rotating on carpet, try to spin on one foot from a standing position. Start with your feet about a shoulder width apart, then swing your arms from right to left to gain spinning momentum. As you swing your arms, bring them close to your body when they are to your left. This will decrease your radius and increase your rotational speed. At the same time, pick up your right foot from the ground and lift your left heel. You will now spin on the ball of your left foot. Again, be sure to keep your back straight to keep your balance. When you make a full 360 degree turn, let your right foot and your left heel down. If you can stop and not move at all, then your spin is good. After you accomplish both of these, combine the two together. You might not get it at first, but at this point, you just need to get used to spinning in a different position.

HPW knows more than I, so follow his advice when he gives you some. Until then, that's all I can help you with.If you have a camera, then make a video of your sweep and put it on Youtube. We will be able to help you more if we can identify your problems or bad habits. Good luck!

Do other people have trouble spinning on the carpet at your Wushu school? It may just be the carpet (especially if it sinks too much). Post a video when you get a chance - then we'll be able to tell if its the carpet or your technique, or both Wink
